We see that he’s carrying a burden that nobody else knows about and that he’s trying to keep from everybody else, including Nikita, because he doesn’t want to place that on her. That’s the source of his tension, and I believe it balances out any of the initial harshness that he might have. He’s not coming from a place of, “I’m the boss, and I’m going to do this to be the boss,” it’s, “If we screw up, we’re all dead.
